Paw Paw, MI – On November 2, 2021, voters within the boundaries of the Paw Paw Public School District will be asked to renew and restore the District’s non-homestead millage, which funds its day-to-day operations. There is no cost on primary residences. The 18-mill request would be levied only on non-homestead properties. This Operating Millage is required for the District to continue to receive its full per-pupil foundation allowance from the State of Michigan. This a zero-tax-rate-increase.
The 18 mills collected applies only to businesses, commercial property, vacation homes and rental properties but does not affect taxes on primary residences. School districts throughout Michigan are expected to renew their non-homestead millages every 10 years. The non-homestead millage accounts for approximately $2.8 million annually, or 11 percent of the Paw Paw Public School District’s total budget.
“An operating millage is critical for any school district,” says Superintendent Rick Reo. “Without this revenue, we would receive approximately 11% less funding for the next 10 years. Programs, class sizes, materials, staffing and extracurricular offerings would be significantly impacted.”
This millage contributes directly to the operating budget and helps ensure that students continue to receive the benefits of a high-quality education. It impacts only the general fund operating budget and is not related to the Facility Improvement Bond that was proposed in August 2021.
“The funds generated from this Operating Millage renewal will allow the District to continue to pay for its instructional programs, staffing, professional development training, transportation and other essential needs to operate the District,” says Reo.
