Over the summer, the playground at Paw Paw Early Childhood Center got some exciting new upgrades! Construction crews refreshed the outdoor spaces and installed new, modern playground equipment, providing even more opportunities for children to explore, imagine, and grow.

Among the most impactful additions was a brand-new, customized outdoor communication board. Designed in collaboration with Project Jade—an Upper Peninsula-based non-profit organization dedicated to expanding AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) tools—the board features playground-specific pictures and symbols tailored directly to the students' outdoor play needs.

Breaking Down Barriers to Connection

Many students with diverse communication needs utilize AAC devices, such as school- or insurance-funded iPads, inside the classroom. However, carrying electronic devices around a busy playground can be cumbersome. The weather-resistant outdoor board provides a seamless, accessible solution directly where children play.

Now, every child can connect, play, and belong by pointing to pictures and symbols to express their feelings, needs, and ideas. Whether a student wants to ask for a turn on the slide, express that they are happy or tired, or tell a peer to "run" or "play," the communication board eliminates barriers so all students can advocate for themselves.

This vital addition to our district was made possible through the generosity and collaboration of local community partners:

  • The Paw Paw Lions Club provided the sponsorship funding to purchase the communication board.

  • Hall Builders generously donated the posts, materials, and labor to install the sign securely for year-round play.

Reflecting the district’s core value of innovation, Superintendent Jeremy Davison shared that providing tools like this ensures every child has the resources they need to communicate effectively and feel included.

Paw Paw Public Schools extends a heartfelt thank you to the Paw Paw Lions Club, Hall Builders, and Project Jade for helping us build better spaces, stronger connections, and a brighter future for our students!
