Paw Paw, MI - Each year, the Van Buren County Intermediate School District (I.S.D.) sponsors the Educational Hero Awards to honor individuals in Van Buren County school districts who have made a difference in the overall quality of education that students receive.

In the Paw Paw Public School District, 18 individuals were nominated, and two teachers were selected as winners. They were publicly recognized for this achievement at Monday's Board of Education meeting. Superintendent Rick Reo presented the awards to third-grade teacher Michele Schantz and high school Spanish teacher Zachary Daniels.

The Van Buren County I.S.D. and the Van Buren County Association of School Boards used the following additional criteria to select the winners:

  • Demonstrating knowledge and skill in their area of responsibility.
  • Developing unique programs that have enhanced the classroom learning experience.
  • Playing a leadership role in education.
  • Providing support for a program, service, or event that significantly impacts education.
  • Exhibiting an attitude that promotes a positive working and learning environment and reflects positively on your school district.
  • Someone who has made an impact on the quality of an individual student’s educational experience.
  • Demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of individual students.
  • Providing service “above and beyond” (over and above their job description.)
