What is the Van Buren Youth Initiative?
Van Buren Youth Initiative (VBYI) is a county-wide youth enrichment program coordinated by the Van Buren Intermediate School District that expands high-quality, out-of-school time opportunities for students across Van Buren County. VBYI partners with local school districts and community organizations to strengthen and expand after-school and summer programming that nurtures student growth, learning, connection, and personal development in communities across Van Buren County.
The initiative focuses on equitable access, removing barriers like cost and transportation so that all youth in the county can participate in engaging, safe, and meaningful activities. Programs often include academic enrichment, arts and creative experiences, leadership development, mentoring, and skill-building workshops- all delivered through strong partnerships with schools and community organizations such as South Haven Center for the Arts, Luc’s Light, and His Place Outreach Center.
Coordinated by VBISD’s VBYI Coordinator, Erin Kucharski, VBYI brings together educators, local artists, volunteers, and community partners to build supportive learning spaces where students can explore interests, strengthen confidence, and make positive peer and adult connections. The program’s growth is supported by grants like Michigan’s Out-of-School Time (OST) grant, which enables expansion into more districts, deeper programming, and improved access county-wide.
Overall, VBYI reflects VBISD’s broader mission to empower learners and strengthen community through collaborative, innovative services that enhance youth success both inside and outside the classroom.
