• About Me

I have spent the majority of my life dedicated to the field of education, either through my actual teaching experiences or through my hobby of reenacting.  I have had the privilege and joy of teaching students of all ages and races, from my earliest memories of reenacting and explaining to foreign tourists about history to my days happily spent in the classroom.

I have been teaching at Michigan Avenue Academy since 1997 and cannot imagine teaching anywhere else.  I love my job and I love my students.   I have taught alternative high school, credit retrieval, and high school completion/GED classes at the county jail.  In addition to my teaching experiences I have also been the coordinator for both the middle school and high school summer school programs.  Through my student teaching experiences I was able to work with a special education teacher who utilized a therapy dog.  I definitely learned a lot from her.

I grew up in a small town in Northwestern Michigan called East Jordan.  It is most famous for making manhole covers thanks to the main industry, East Jordan Iron Works.  I have been married since 1995 to my wonderful husband, Tom.  We met in college at Central Michigan University.  We live in Paw Paw.  In November 2008 we joyfully welcomed our first child into our lives, William David.  In October 2012 our second child, Jonathan Thomas made our family complete .  Our boys are our pride and joy.  Life as a mother is an interesting and exciting adventure and I look forward to what the coming years bring.

My husband and I are historical reenactors.  We participate in recreating three different time periods:  the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812.  We portray the British in the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War and we portray Americans for the War of 1812.  We are most active in the War of 1812 unit.  We portray the United States Regiment of Riflemen.  This was an elite and specialized unit during the war.  Eventually, the modern Army Rangers grew out of this experimental unit.  My husband is the sergeant of our unit and I portray an army wash woman.  It is tons and tons of fun and we have friends all over the country because of it.  Our most memorable trips have been to Ft. George in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Ft. Niagara in Youngstown, NY, and Ft. McHenry in Baltimore, MD.

I am an avid reader of both fantasy, historical fiction, and anything having to do with the War of 1812. My favorite place to vacation is one of the Disney amusement parks, but soon it may be Universal Islands of Adventure.  This is because I am an unabashed Harry Potter fanatic and IOA has a Potter themed area.  Hurray!!! (Now I just have to find the time to visit.)

In case you hadn't heard, you should be prepared for an unceasing sense of humor from me.  You have been warned!
